Matheran is a small hill station and it takes approximately 2-3 days to complete the whole tour. On the very first day after you reach the place, head to Charlotte Lake directly from your Matheran hotels. It is located 2 km away from the town’s Post Office. Amidst the reddish brown mountain ranges, Charlotte Lake offers a spectacular view of the surroundings. Being, the main source of drinking water for the city, water activities are strictly prohibited here. Monsoon offers a unique sight of fresh water. Surrounded with trees and birds flying over the lake add to the beauty of the lake. On the right, the Echo point is there and on the left an ancient Pisharath temple. The temple located in the vicinity of the lake is an ideal place to take a religious dip. Surrounded by lush greenery and a tranquil place, the Pisharath temple offers immense peace to the mind. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is the oldest temple of Matheran. The Shiva Lingam is in unique ‘L’ shape and is covered with sindur. The temple is situated at an average altitude of 2516 feet above the sea level, thus, providing a magnificent view of the surroundings.
The best way to slowly soak and unwind the hill is by a horse ride. There are many lookout points in Matheran that offers great views of the Western Ghats and the plains dotted with villages. Panorama Point, Monkey Point, Alexander Point and the One Tree Point are some famous among the others. Panorama Point is the best point to catch the sunrise. It is about 6 km from the Post Office and it is a well-known picnic spot as well.
Besides, nature lover and peace seeker, Matheran is also for adventure buffs. On the next day start early in the morning for the blissful Parasailing. 3500 feet above the ground will make you crazy. The view when you are literally flying is a memorable one. You need to feel the excitement while passing through the clouds. September to June is the apt time to enjoy parasailing. The charges here depend upon the duration. It ranges from Rs 1500 to Rs 2500 for 10 -30 mins. Maybe for some it’s heavy on the pocket but it is an experience for the lifetime. Valley Crossing is another unique thing to experience in Matheran. It is done on a U-shaped mountain, hanging on a rope, about 1000 feet above from one side of the mountain to another.
