After the Housing for All Scheme, the Modi Government is going to bring a new rental housing policy of Rs. 2700 crores for the urban poor who are living in selected 100 smart cities.
Once again Modi Government has come up with a new surprise for the tenants. This time the central government of India is considering for the payment of tenants’ rent through vouchers.
Details of Policy
Under this policy, the government will pay rent for the poor living in 100 smart cities. Vouchers will be given to the eligible poor for this process. There is a possibility of costing Rs 2,713 crores annually when the scheme is started.

Rent vouchers will be distributed to poor with the help of urban bodies. The tenant will give these vouchers to the landlord. The landlord will be able to transfer this into his account through any Citizen Service Bureau.
If the rent is higher than the value of the voucher, the tenant has to pay it himself. The value of the rent voucher will determine the body according to the size of the city and the room.
According to the 2011 census, about 27.5% of the population lives in the rented houses in the cities. However, according to the National Sample Survey data, in 2009, 35 percent of the people in the cities live in rented homes.
Recently, the Benami Properties Act was implemented. It is believed that the Center will use the seized property of anonymity to build affordable houses. This will help in reducing the shortage of houses.
