The PM Awas Yojana (PMAY) was launched with an aim of ‘housing for all’ by 2022, but the dwelling place for poor remain a distant dream as none of the beneficiaries have been provided housing yet. The housing units have either not been constructed or are still under construction. A district urban development agency officer said that the process will take at least three months before the construction begins.
According to the ESCC-2011, Meerut municipal corporation area had 40% of its population living in slums. In fact, many of these people are still unaware of the scheme.
The program executive of Janhit Foundation Mr. Ajay Kumar said that most people in slums are unaware of government schemes. He also said that they have been trying to help people to avail these schemes, but it’s difficult to reach to the officials. Government doesn’t respond. People in slums are still struggling.

However, a DUDA officer said that the process of allotting houses under PMAY has begun. It will take some time.
The Press Officer of district urban development agency (DUDA) Mr. R P Singh said that they have received around 30,000 online applications for houses under PMAY in Meerut district. Various approvals need to be taken from different departments. The process will take another three months at least before construction can begin. Nothing has been happening for the past few months due to elections.
