In order to achieve the target of providing housing for all under PM Awas Yojana Tamil Nadu. So, Tamil Nadu government has decided to construct two lakh affordable houses for economically weaker sections (EWS) under the Centre’s most ambitious scheme Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). However, these houses would be constructed at the cost of Rs 7,800 crore.
According to the sources, Tamil Nadu government will construct 1.84 lakh independent houses under Beneficiary Led construction (BLC). Besides, the state government will provide financial assistance to the EWS category individual eligible families for constructing new houses or enhancement of existing houses under PM Awas Yojana Tamil Nadu. As per the plan, these independent houses would be constructed at the cost of Rs 5,600 crore and the Union and state governments provide a subsidy of Rs 2.10 lakh at per unit.
According to the scheme, the Central assistance would be directly transferred to the bank accounts of identified beneficiaries through the state government. However, this contribution amount will be provided in three or four installments. For ensuring the quality of construction, the state housing department has to engage third-party quality monitoring agencies (TPQMA).
Besides, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board has also decided to construct 15,000 multi- storeyed tenements and 6,874 units by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) with a total project cost of Rs 2,200 crore under the Affordable Housing in Partnership. The cost of per unit will be Rs 10 lakh under a component of the PM Awas Yojana Tamil Nadu.
