Vijayawada is a beautiful, ancient city in the state of Andhra Pradesh, which is also quickly turning into a major commercial powerhouse in the state. It is for this fact that the city is also referred to as the “Business Capital of Andhra Pradesh”. The city is taking steps towards a great future. It is already home to number of industries belonging to different sectors. The city is very well planned, crime rates are low, and infrastructure is at excellent state. It is for this fact that the popular business magazine McKinsey Quarterly recognized the city as the “Global City of the Future”! With everything in the city moving forward in the right direction, tourism in Vijayawada is also taking leaps towards growth.

Today, tourism is one of the major facets of the city. Vijayawada, the ‘Land of Victory’ (literal meaning of the name), is brimming with historical forts and monuments, revered temples, churches, and shrines, ecological parks, excellent museum, modern marvels, lavish Vijayawada Hotels, and several others. The mighty river Krishna cross-crosses through the city and irrigates it. In addition, the river also earns a huge religious significance and is seen with a great respect.

Summer arrives in Vijayawada in May and stays till June; it gets very hot during this season with the mercury rising up to 47 degree Celsius. Besides, humidity is also a problem in the city. The winters however are quite pleasant, with the temperature coming down to 20 to 27 degree Celsius.

The number of sightseeing spots in Vijayawada is quite big. Of these, one tourists spot that is a must visit is the Prakasam Barrage, which is built over the Krishna River. The idea of building the barrage came quite early, somewhere in 1798. But the actual build started quite late. It was after when Major Cotton endorsed the build of the barrage, the East India Company finally approved the construction, in January 1850. Its construction started in 1852 and it took three years for the barrage to get complete. Following the independence of India, the state government then built a bridge over the barrage that connected the Krishna district with the Guntur district. The bridge was named Prakasam Barrage after the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, which was then called just Andhra.

Finally completed in 1957 the barrage today is one major constituent of the Vijayawada city and the state. The water from the canals of the barrage is used to irrigate the lands and to generate electricity. It is a long barrage/dam which is about 1223.5 mts. There are 37 different spillways for discharging the water. The gates of the dam are huge with crane chains.

The construction of the dam led to the formation of an artificial lake, which is today a major tourist spot. Locals head to the lakesides for picnic. One could easily park somewhere in the middle of the bridge to enjoy the panoramic view that include the placid lake, beautiful hill, and the bridge. Sunset and sunrise look amazing from the bridge. The lake is not that deep, and today it is the hub of number of water sports activities like boating, water scooting, and parasailing etc. The good thing is that there are couple of good budget hotels in Vijayawada that also offer transportation services to Prakasam Bridge. Other than that, all local transportation modes like auto-rickshaws, buses, taxis, and hired cabs are available from Vijayawada.
